3 Myths About Nursing Home Abuse

3 Myths About Nursing Home Abuse

Medical negligence is a very real thing in these settings.

Nursing home care is something we inherently have a great amount of trust and respect for as patients. When we take our loved ones to stay at a nursing home, it’s difficult to understand at first. Nobody wants to be parted from their family, no matter what the circumstances may be. Especially as people get older, nursing homes can turn into a necessity, particular for those suffering from dementia. The scary part of nursing homes is when you hear the stories in the news of employees being abusive toward patients. That information is frightening for those trying to move their loved one to a facility. Medical negligence is a very real thing in these settings.

The Abuse Will Be Obvious

False. People can easily take bruising or marks and attribute it to old age. That’s actually the answer for most things that happen to elderly folks in the nursing home. Employees or external people gauge their marks as a natural progression of old age. It’s a sad conclusion to jump to, because some patients could legitimately be suffering from abuse.

If The Older Person Says Nothing Happened, Then Nothing Did

The sad truth is that many nursing home abuse victims opt to not tell anyone, and there’s a few reasons for that. The first is that they just may not remember. Depending on the condition they’re in, many patients in nursing homes might not be able to recall the situation and what brought them pain. The second is that they feel like telling someone won’t result in anything. If a loved one is experiencing abuse in a nursing home, that is absolutely a case of medical negligence.

Stress Is The Factor

Stress is certainly involved for caretakers working at a nursing home, but every profession deals with stress. Stress isn’t an excuse for someone to abuse another person. Abuse of the elderly is nothing to scoff at either, as it can cause severe emotional and physical stress, as well as the potential for disease.
