4 Common Types of Catastrophic Injuries

Catastrophic injuries are those that cause long term or permanent damage.

A catastrophic injury is one that we hope we never have to encounter, but unfortunately it does occur. For an injury to be considered catastrophic, that means it will affect someone’s way of living permanently or at least for an extended period of time. Catastrophic injuries may require years of treatment, surgery, pain, and emotional distress. Here are four common types of catastrophic injuries.

Brain Injuries

The brain is the most important organ in our body, controlling every other part of the body. This is why brain injuries are almost always considered to be catastrophic. Brain injuries range in severity, some able to be remedied completely while most have long lasting effects on the victim. Amnesia, concussions, edema, and penetrating injuries are some common examples of catastrophic brain injuries.

Spinal Cord Injuries

The spinal cord is another very important element of our bodies because it controls our ability to move around. Damage to the spinal cord can lead to partial or complete body paralysis. Spinal cord injuries often result from some sort of physical trauma or impact which in turn crushes or fractures some part of the spinal cord.

Burn Injuries

Even a minor burn can leave a scar on a victim’s body. Severe burn injuries can lead to serious, permanent scarring on the body where the burn occurred. Even with advances in technology for things like reconstructive surgery, the scars from burns still can’t be eliminated completely. Severe burn injuries can take months or years to fully recover and require a number of painful surgeries.

Scars

Any type of permanent scarring can be considered a catastrophic injury. This could be the result of an auto accident, slip and fall, or something like a dog attack. Any injury that leaves a person permanently disfigured in some way is counted as catastrophic. This is because even though the injury may heal completely, the scars that remain can really affect a person emotionally.
