A Brief Guide to Strokes

Here are some things that you should know about the causes, types, and symptoms of a stroke.

A stroke is a serious medical event that can give you permanent injuries or even lead to death. Unfortunately, there is a high rate of stroke misdiagnosis because many of the symptoms of a stroke are similar to other complications. Here are some things that you should know about the causes, types, and symptoms of a stroke.

Causes

First, you should find out if you have a family history of strokes because. If so, this could mean you have a genetic tendency towards developing a stroke at some point in life. Otherwise, the leading causes of strokes are similar to many other health issues, and that is the lack of a healthy diet and exercise. This is because of high blood pressure, which contributes to strokes as well as heart attacks. Additionally, smoking and some prescription medications affect the clotting properties in your blood and increase your risk of stroke. Communicating your concerns and genetic history with your regular doctor will make them aware of whether you are more likely to have a stroke, which will reduce the chance of misdiagnosis if it happens.

Types

Believe it or not, there is more than one type of stroke. The two most common types are ischemic and hemorrhagic. An ischemic stroke is what most people think of when they hear about a stroke, and that is one involving a blood clot that prevents the flow of oxygen to the brain. The hemorrhagic stroke is more similar to an aneurysm, where a blood vessel ruptures and bleeds into an area of the brain. Both types can lead to a devastating stroke injury if they are misdiagnosed or treated incorrectly.

Symptoms

Knowing the symptoms is the most pertinent information because it empowers you to help avoid a costly misdiagnosis. Along with numbness, sudden and severe headaches, and dizziness trouble speaking is a hallmark symptom of a stroke. You also might have heard of the symptom-checking acronym F.A.S.T which stands for Face, Arms, Speech and Time. Unevenness and drooping on one side of the face or one of the arms means that one side of the brain is experiencing a stroke. This is also what causes difficulty in speech. The last step, time, means that you should call 911 immediately and try to note the time when your symptoms first appeared.
