Birth Injuries That Can Be Caused by a C-Section

Here are some of the most common birth injuries that are caused by a C-section.

Whether there is an emergency during delivery or it was pre-scheduled, a Cesarean section, commonly known as a C-section delivery is a potentially dangerous way to bring a baby into the world. Because a C-section involves making an incision at the location of a mother’s womb in order to remove the baby, it is a delicate procedure that can harm a newborn if something goes wrong. Here are some of the most common birth injuries that are caused by a C-section.

Lacerations

When making the incision for a C-section, there is a risk that the surgeon could accidentally put lacerations, such as cuts or scratches, on the infant inside. And even a minor a laceration to a newborn fetus can be particularly devastating. Depending on where the laceration occurred, it can lead to umbilical cord injuries, and even bone fractures and Erb’s Palsy.

Breathing Issues

Although many people might argue that a C-section is ultimately a safer way to deliver a baby, there are several lesser-known risks, including breathing problems. In many cases, an infant developing mild breathing issues is an unfortunate but natural effect of C-section delivery. However, a doctor’s negligence could worsen this condition by failing to properly monitor the infant’s breathing after their birth. Furthermore, birth asphyxia can occur, which is an injury resulting from a delayed C-section where a baby does not receive the oxygen he or she needs.

Delayed C-Section

When a C-section is not performed in a timely manner then that can lead to otherwise-preventable complications. A delayed C-section occurs when a doctor either does not schedule the C-section soon enough or does not properly monitor the mother for signs of fetal distress that would require a C-section. A delayed C-section can lead to permanent physical injury and often the death of the infant.
