Common Causes of Brain Damage in Infants

When brain damage occurs in an infant, it can lead to serious conditions such as Cerebral Palsy.

Childbirth is a very exciting process, but it also comes with some risks. Birth injuries are more common than we think and it’s good to be informed about the possibilities. Brain damage in infants can lead to more serious conditions such as Cerebral Palsy. Here are some common causes of brain damage in infants.

Infection

During pregnancy, if the mother gets some sort of infection, it can be passed down to the fetus. Conditions such as German measles and CMV are known viruses that can lead a child to have Cerebral Palsy. The proteins released to fight the infection also cause inflammation to the baby’s brain, causing brain damage. Prenatal infections are the most dangerous in the very beginning stages of pregnancy. Mothers who consume undercooked or raw meat have a higher chance of getting an infection.

Severe Jaundice

Jaundice is caused by an excess amount of bilirubin (a chemical pigment) in the body, causing the skin and eyes to turn a yellow color. Mild jaundice is normal in newborns and will typically clear up on its own. However, severe cases that are left untreated can turn into Kernicterus, which is when an unsafe amount of bilirubin accumulates. Too much bilirubin becomes toxic to the brain.

Birth Asphyxia

This occurs when there isn’t enough oxygen getting to a baby’s brain during or after birth. The severity of brain damage that results from this depends on how long the brain went without oxygen. Birth asphyxia could be a possible result of medical negligence on the doctor’s part. After birth, things like choking or a near-drowning experience can cause significant brain damage.
