Everything You Should Know About Bedsores

Bedsores are a condition that can arise out of the negligence of nurses at hospitals or, most commonly, nursing homes. Any case of nursing home abuse and neglect can be difficult to detect, as well as emotionally difficult to deal with the worry of whether your loved one is being treated properly. Here are a few things you should know about bedsores, and how they are the warning signs of neglect.

What are Bedsores?

Also known as decubitus ulcers, bedsores are caused by lying in the same position for extended periods of time. They are a type of pressure ulcer that develops when the skin is trapped and compressed against the bed, and that pressure combined with the lack of air circulation and the buildup of germs can lead to infection. Bedsores are usually concentrated on the boniest parts of the body like the shoulder blades, hips, elbows, and ankles. It would make sense that a patient at a nursing home would be at the most risk for developing bedsores because they are often immobile. For this reason, all nursing homes should adhere to a two-hour rule where the nurse turns a patient every two hours. If your loved one has these large red spots that look like a ruptured boil, then it’s a clear sign that the nurses were not providing the proper care.

Why They’re Harmful

In addition to bedsores being extremely uncomfortable and even painful, they can lead to other serious health issues. Gone untreated, bedsores will progress into worsening stages as they work deeper through the layers of the skin. Their effect is similar to decay, eating away and damaging tissue even down to the muscle and bone. Especially for the elderly, who already have weak bones and joints in most cases, untreated bedsores can lead to irreversible damage. And bedsores are also opening the skin to infections that could spread to the rest of the body.
