The Four Different Types of Cerebral Palsy and Their Signs

Four Different Types of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a serious brain condition. Learn to recognize the signs of four different kinds of CP below.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a condition of impaired motor coordination. The word cerebral refers to the brain and palsy relates to paralysis or involuntary movement. Cerebral palsy is caused by an injury to the brain. It can occur while the brain is developing before, during, or after a child is born. This condition affects muscle control, reflexes, and motor skills, among other things. There are four different types of cerebral palsy which you need to be on the lookout for. If you notice any of the signs, contact The Snyder Law Group to assess your legal rights and potential case.

1) Spastic

This is the most common type of cerebral palsy. It is often associated with jerky or exaggerated movements. Symptoms of spastic CP include:

  • muscles that are permanently tightened
  • stiffness in one area of the body
  • awkward reflexes
  • in older children, an uneven, abnormal gait or way of walking

2) Athetoid

A small percentage of children who have cerebral palsy have this type which is also known as non-spastic CP. This condition causes muscle tone to fluctuate. It can be recognized by involuntary movements. This can occur in the face, arms, and legs, or torso. Symptoms include difficulty feeding, a stiff body, and floppy limbs, as well as posture issues in older children.

3) Ataxic

Ataxic CP is the least common form of cerebral palsy. Children who have it exhibit clumsiness and their movements tend to be not very smooth. Symptoms include trouble maintaining balance and having shaky, unsteady movements.

4) Mixed

Mixed cerebral palsy is identified as the condition where a person shows signs of more than one kind of CP. This could be because the injury was not confined to one section of the brain. Many times the condition is noted by symptoms of both spastic and athetoid CP.
