Potential Birth Injuries That Can Result From a Cesarean Section

A Cesarean section is an alternative delivery method. Just like any method of child birth, it comes with risks of birth injuries.

A Cesarean section, commonly known as a C-section, is a birth method that involves cutting the stomach open to deliver the baby. C-sections are happening more often now than they were before, although there has to be a valid reason to perform this procedure. With all childbirths, there are risks for complications and injury. Here are some potential birth injuries that can result from a Cesarean section.

Fetal Lacerations

Lacerations refer to cuts, scrapes, scratches, and other similar injuries. Fetal lacerations typically only occur if a doctor doesn’t perform the procedure correctly, so it is a direct result of medical negligence. These lacerations can be anywhere from minor to very severe. Severe lacerations can lead to more serious birth injuries such as fractures, cervical cord injuries, and even Erb’s Palsy.

Breathing Problems

Babies are at a higher risk of having breathing problems when delivered by a C-section. This is a natural risk of the procedure, so it isn’t always a result of negligence. However, if the baby is having breathing problems, it is important that they are monitored at all times after birth. Complications of breathing problems could lead to respiratory distress syndrome.

Delayed C-Section

Sometimes, a doctor won’t schedule a C-section in time despite several warning signs. One of the most common reasons for a C-section is fetal distress. If the doctor doesn’t correctly monitor the mother for distress, it could lead to a delayed procedure. Other times, they may have failed to book an operating room in time for the C-section. A delayed C-section is very serious and could ultimately lead to an infant’s death. Other risks include birth asphyxia (lack of oxygen to the baby), delays in physical development, and a higher chance of physical injury.
