Spotting Distracted Drivers

Every day, car accidents claim more than 90 lives in the United States. Even non-fatal crashes result in life-changing, catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries and disfigurement. In the modern age, distracted driving has become one of the leading causes of car crashes. Even if you don’t give in to distraction yourself, you can’t account for the actions of others. Today, we’ll give you some tips for spotting distracted drivers so that you can avoid an accident.

It only takes one distracted driver to cause an accident. With these tips in mind, you can spot and avoid distracted drivers!

Drifting Between Lanes

Have you ever been cruising along the highway, only to notice the driver ahead of you repeatedly drift out of their lane? This is typical of both distracted drivers and drunk drivers. Both are equally dangerous. But if you notice this behavior accompanied by sudden shifts back into their lane, it’s more likely to be the former.

When the driver drifts into a neighboring lane, they are most likely looking at their phone. As they glance back at the road, they will suddenly compensate for their drifting. Don’t let their negligence impact your safety. Stay a good distance behind them, or pass them if you have sufficient space to do so.

Speeding (Or the Opposite)

Speeding is an inherently dangerous driving behavior. In certain circumstances, driving too slowly can be nearly as dangerous. There are plenty of reasons why an individual might be inclined to drive too slow or too fast. Both of these behaviors could occur as a result of distraction.

Distracted drivers may speed when they simply lose track of how fast they are going. Or they may try to compensate for their risky behavior by slowing down. If you notice either of these behaviors, it’s best to give them some space.

Responding Slowly

These days, people have become increasingly comfortable with checking their phones at red lights. This accounts for the all-too-common scenario in which the light turns green, but drivers are too engrossed in their cell phones to notice.

If you find yourself having to honk to alert the drivers in front of you to the green light, you should keep in mind that this is more than just an inconvenience; it’s potentially dangerous. The person in front of you may be especially prone to distraction, even when their vehicle is in motion.

Green lights aren’t the only thing distracted drivers may be slow to respond to. Keep a look-out for drivers who react slowly to other hazards, such as pedestrians and emergency vehicles. Even if these drivers aren’t distracted by their cell phones, you should keep your distance.
