Three Types of Cerebral Palsy

Many people may not realize that cerebral palsy is often a result of medical malpractice during a delivery.

Cerebral palsy is a brain condition that affects a person’s involuntary muscle movements and impacts their ability to function. It is a lifelong condition that usually begins at or before birth, and many people may not realize that it is often a result of medical malpractice during a delivery. If you suspect that your child is experiencing symptoms of cerebral palsy, then here is some fundamental information about cerebral palsy and its different types.

Spastic

The most common type, spastic cerebral palsy is caused by brain damage in the cerebral cortex, which is the outermost section of the brain. The main characteristic of spastic cerebral palsy is increased muscle tone. This means that the muscles in the body, which normally work in pairs of one muscle contracting while the other relaxes, are always in a state of increased tension. Symptoms can range from mild to severely impaired mobility that would require a wheelchair or crutches. Generally, cerebral palsy is not a condition that worsens over time, but the increased muscle tension in spastic cerebral palsy can become worse, especially if the victim overexerts themselves or undergoes emotional stress.

Athetoid

This type of cerebral palsy occurs from brain damage to the basal ganglia, which located in the mid-region of the brain. Also called dyskinetic cerebral palsy, athetoid cerebral palsy causes mixed muscle tone, where some of the muscles are too relaxed, and others are too tight. Symptoms of athetoid cerebral palsy are involuntary twisting movements in the limbs or loss of control in the facial muscles that can lead to drooling. The severity of the symptoms can vary throughout the day or are affected by stress levels.

Ataxic

Lastly, ataxic cerebral palsy is the least common type. It is caused by brain damage to the cerebellum, which the part of the brain at the base that controls balance and coordination. In addition to low muscle tone, where muscles are too relaxed, victims of ataxic cerebral palsy can also experience tremors and difficulty walking.
