What Injuries can Occur from a Cesarean Section?

A Cesarean Section (C-Section) is when a baby is delivered surgically by making an incision in the mother’s stomach.

Childbirth is a beautiful process, but it also comes with a lot of risks. In some cases, a Cesarean section (C-section) is necessary to safely deliver a baby that is having complications. A C-section is when the baby is delivered surgically by making an incision in the mother’s stomach rather than delivering vaginally, increasing the risk of injury. Here are some of the injuries that can occur as a result of a Cesarean Section.

Fetal Lacerations

Because a Cesarean Section requires incisions to be made, there is a risk for the baby to obtain cuts, scrapes, and other lacerations from the tools used. Often times, fetal lacerations are a result of a mistake during the procedure, which could possibly be a case of medical malpractice. These lacerations can range from mild to severe and can lead to more serious conditions.

Delayed C-Section

Time is of the essence when it comes to delivering a child, so when there are complications, there is no time to waste. If a doctor fails to schedule a C-section when warning signs were present, this is a delayed C-section. A delayed C-section can result in lack of oxygen to a baby’s brain, a higher risk of physical injuries, physical development delays, and even death. Delayed C-sections can also occur if a doctor fails to properly monitor the mother for signs of distress or doesn’t book an operating room in time.

Anesthesia Mistakes

The anesthesiologist plays a vital role in any surgery, ensuring that the patient receives the right dosage of anesthesia while also monitoring their vitals throughout the procedure. During childbirth, specific types of anesthesia are given to relieve some of the pain. If the wrong dosage is given or the mother is allergic, it could result in serious injuries to the mother such as low blood pressure, internal bleeding, severe headaches, blood clots, and more.
