Common Birth Injuries Due To Medical Malpractice

Birth Injuries that result from medical malpractice can permanently affect your child’s life.

Unfortunately, a good number of birth injuries could have been avoided with better medical care. In the cases where the injuries could have been prevented, it becomes an issue of medical malpractice. Everyone wants their child to be completely healthy when born so when an injury occurs as a result of the doctor, justice should be served. Here are some of the most common birth injuries that can occur due to medical malpractice.

Brachial Palsy Injuries

These birth injuries occur when the nerves that are in control of arm and hand movement are damaged. There are variations of this particular injury including Erb’s Palsy or Klumpke’s Palsy. These injuries are most commonly a result of shoulder dystocia, which occurs when a baby’s shoulders get stuck in the mother’s pelvic bone while she is delivering. The doctor has to be very careful when this happens because delivering the baby can be difficult. If the doctor pulls too hard or pulls incorrectly while trying to deliver, it can result in permanent damage, hence a result of medical malpractice.

Facial Paralysis

A baby’s head is one of the most fragile parts of their body. Sometimes, a doctor must use forceps or vacuum extraction to deliver the baby when they need more assistance coming out. This method is the most common reason for facial paralysis to occur. If the doctor puts too much pressure on the baby’s face when using this method, it can damage some of their nerves. The baby may not be able to close one eye or will have limited movement on one side of the face for a few weeks. If it’s more severe, the paralysis could be permanent.

Brain Injuries

Oxygen deprivation is something that occurs often during the delivery process and can lead to many problems if it lasts for too long. Conditions like Cerebral Palsy and seizures are a few of the common birth injuries that can be a result of a brain injury. Oxygen deprivation can occur if a doctor fails to monitor the baby correctly after they are born or from umbilical cord issues. Even mild cases of oxygen deprivation can lead to long term mental disabilities and physical problems.
