Birth Injury Causes Related to Medical Malpractice

Take a look at the common medical malpractice errors associated with birth injuries.

Although there are a lot of risks involved in childbirth, parents still hope and expect their baby to be delivered healthy and without harm. When birth injuries occur, it can be a terrible and traumatizing experience for the family. If you would like to know more about what causes birth injuries, take a look at the common medical malpractice errors associated with them.

Cerebral palsy

There are many lifelong conditions, like cerebral palsy, that are caused by a birth injury. In particular, there are different types of cerebral palsy that can come from brain damage through infection, lack of oxygen and more. Furthermore, an infant can suffer from Erb’s palsy, or Brachial Plexus palsy, from a rough delivery that twists the shoulder, and shoulder dystocia.

Paralysis

There is also a risk of the infant getting paralyzed from a birth injury. For example, during a c-section delivery, fetal lacerations can go deep enough to damage the spinal cord. One of the most common birth injuries is facial paralysis, which can occur when too much pressure is applied to the baby’s face during delivery. This can happen when a doctor performs a forceps or vacuum extraction, which are both known to carry risks of harming the infant.

Brain Injury

In addition to the injuries noted above, there are other ways that a newborn could suffer brain damage from medical malpractice. In particular overlooked infections or chemical imbalances, like kernicterus, can harm the baby’s brain. And even oxygen deprivation, birth asphyxia, can occur and if the doctor doesn’t carefully monitor the baby’s condition then a lack of oxygen could lead to severe brain damage.
