What Happened During the Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse?

In the early morning of March 26th, as AP News reports, a rogue container ship smashed into one of the 47-year-old bridge’s support pillars, causing a shockwave that resulted in the devastating and complete collapse of the bridge.

According to reports, the ship lost power sometime before impact and seemed unable to take steps to avoid a collision. The vessel’s crew members notified local authorities at approximately 1:30 am about the inevitable crash. While the emergency response crew diverted some traffic away from the bridge, others could not be saved. At the time of the collapse, workers were repairing the pavement, and passenger cars were driving on the structure.

Authorities are still working out the exact cause and timeline of the crash. For example, it’s unclear how much time elapsed between when the ship lost power and when it collided with the bridge. Grace Ocean Private Ltd. owns the vessel and Synergy Marine Group manages it.

Casualties May Have a Right to Compensation Under Federal and State Law

Those harmed in the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse may have a lawsuit against those who caused the incident. The key question in these situations is who is directly or indirectly responsible for the specific victim’s injuries. For example, they may have a federal or international law claim against the vessel’s owner or manager.

Likewise, if the ship’s crew members made a mistake that led to the incident, they or their employer may be at fault. If the bridge’s construction or poor maintenance made it more susceptible to collapse in this situation, it’s possible that state and local governments are legally liable.

Depending on the specific allegations the casualty is making, a host of compensation may be available to them. For example, they may qualify to receive a settlement to cover their docked pay or lifesaving medical treatments. If the person dies because of their injuries, their surviving family members may be eligible for damages to address their losses.

Filing a Wrongful Death Claim if Your Loved Died in the Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

If your loved one died in the Key Bridge collapse, you may be able to request compensation from the at-fault person or parties. How you submit this demand depends on the specific law you’re using to claim damages. For example, a wrongful death claim based on Maryland’s state law may allow surviving children to request money to address, among other things, their mental anguish and the loss of parental guidance and companionship. However, other types of claims may result in a different outcome.
