Giving birth is an exciting and scary process to go through. The last thing we want to think about is possible complications, but unfortunately birth injuries occur more commonly than they should. Shoulder Dystocia is one common injury that can occur while giving birth. Here is what you need to know about Shoulder Dystocia.
Causes
Shoulder Dystocia typically happens when an infant’s shoulders get stuck in the mother’s pelvic area due to the fact that the baby is too big for the birth canal. It can occur if the baby is born face or feet first. Having to pull them out by their face or feet can cause excess stress on the shoulder and neck area.
Symptoms & Risks
The doctor becomes aware of Shoulder Dystocia when the baby’s head has come out, but the shoulders are still stuck in the mother’s pelvic area. The most common symptoms associated with this are nerve damage and pain to the injured area, a claw-like hand, or paralysis of the limb that was affected. One of the more serious risks is Brachial Plexus Palsy, which occurs when the brachial plexus nerves are damaged. This condition usually occurs when the nerves are torn or even completely detached. Mothers can also be at risk for hemorrhaging and uterine rupture if Shoulder Dystocia occurs.
Treatment
The treatment of Shoulder Dystocia depends on the severity of the injuries sustained. Most times, the infant is delivered without brachial plexus nerves being damage. In those minor cases, the injury can typically heal on its own. However, if brachial plexus injuries do occur, treatment can include physical therapy or even surgery in severe cases.
